Thankfully, the Boston police hack originated for the purpose of demonstration and embarrassment and not to jam police communications, send false dispatch reports to on board computers, or delete databases. Arizona DPS was also hacked, however due to someone clicking on a link, which released a Trojan horse, and the rest is history. See http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2011/06/antisec-hackers-leak-files-said-to-be-from-arizona-state-police.html

However, not all hacks are hostile hacks. Here in Orange County, California a well-respected judge's computer was hacked, child porn files turned over to the FBI, and the judge was sent to prison. http://www.ocregister.com/articles/kline-59382-court-computer.html

Nonetheless, protester and non-hostile hacks which do not jeopardize safety serve a purpose - a wakeup call to those who should take security more seriously when in charge of the public's safety.
